For the past 5 weeks, Years 7-10 debating teams have been competing in a friendly debating competition with selective schools across the state. Each week they have fought hard, both winning and losing, but ultimately gaining invaluable skills and experience that they can apply to their debating seasons next year.
Some of the topics they have argued include:
Year 7/8 - That the media should not be allowed to report on the private lives of celebrities
Year 9/10 - That politicians should not be able to have public social media accounts
Year 7/8 - That politicians and their families should be required to use public services (e.g. public schools and public hospitals)
Year 9/10 - That all Australian citizens and permanent residents should be paid a universal wage/basic income
Year 7/8 - That all students should learn a second language
Year 9/10 - That tertiary education should be free
Students also learnt that debating over a small laptop screen is extremely challenging and that in the end it's all worth it for the pizza that they get before their prep time!
Thank you to Ms Hill, Mrs Davis, Miss Phillips, Mr Bell and Miss Rossenrode for giving up their time to supervise the evening competition.
