On Friday, 7 June the year 11 Premier’s Debating team, consisting of Justin, Rowan, Connor and Mei-Mei hosted the year 12 Sydney Technical High School team in the Playoff round of the Premier’s Debating Challenge, having won all three pool debates in a very difficult draw. The team, who have continued to refine their outstanding oratory skills throughout the competition, developed a convincing case arguing against the topic, “That we should ban foreign ownership of Australian land”.
The debate examined the real-world economic and social impacts the topic has on Australia today. The team are to be commended for their close engagement with the opposition’s points and for their use of a broad general knowledge base to compose articulate, well-supported and relevant arguments.
Unfortunately, after a tight decision, Caringbah will not progress to the next round.
The team should be incredibly proud of their development and enthusiasm and for a valiant fight against an accomplished Sydney Tech team. All four speakers have a strong repertoire of speaking, listening and writing skills that will serve them well both in their studies and future endeavours. Congratulations on a fine season.
