In the beginning of the term, Year 11 PDHPE set off on a short trip in two mini-buses to the Nepean Adventure Centre. The centre offered a variety of outdoor recreational activities which correlated with our first unit in class. We learnt heaps of new skills, how to appreciate the environment, while enjoying ourselves and bonding with one another.
Upon arrival, we participated in abseiling. Abseiling was quite an experience and it certainly challenged the ones who feared heights. Following that, we did canoeing and ziplining. Canoeing along the Nepean River was relaxing yet it tested our communication skills. We made a quick, refreshing stop to a small beach where we all got to swim and jump off the rocks. That evening we did ziplining which was very exhilarating, speeding through the evening sky, was a great way to round up the first day of our camp.
On day two, we were woken up bright and early, ready for an activity packed day. We participated in the Quick Drop, Initiative Exercises, High Ropes and Archery tag. Quick Drop and High Ropes did push our comfort zones but also sparked an enjoyable thrill. The initiative exercises were a great team building and bonding exercise while challenging everybody’s coordination and teamwork skills. To wrap up the second day, we did archery tag, which was a fun and energetic activity that both the students and the teachers really enjoyed.
Before we knew it, the final day of the camp rolled around and so did a few sad faces, but we were all ready to go home to have that long awaited hot and clean shower. Before we took off back to civilisation, we were in for the final two activities; archery and the gorge swing. The gorge swing was definitely one to remember, sitting on a giant three-person swing, swinging off a cliff one hundred metres plus off the ground was definitely a thrill for all.
Despite the very early mornings and the many screams, the activities we participated in during the three days really did push many of us to our limits and allowed us to appreciate just how enjoyable outdoor recreational activities can be. This camp was definitely one to remember and a great way to kick start the new school year.
