It was Albert Einstein who said that, "Imagination is more important than knowledge. For knowledge is limited, whereas imagination embraces the entire world, stimulating progress, giving birth to evolution." Sparking a leap into the imagination, the Spark Sutherland Shire Creative Writing Competition encourages young writers who have the courage to realise and share their world with others.

The competition was established by two local English teachers, Samantha Hill, who is here at Caringbah and Robyn De Mayo from Gymea Technology High School. Growing from a desire to promote the value of the craft of writing, as well as identifying a need for student writers to showcase their talents, the teachers launched the idea in 2016. Since then, it has drawn hundreds of entries from a total of 14 local high schools. Spark is judged by committed writers and editors who are members of the Sutherland branch of The Fellowship of Australian Writers, who put in many hours reading and discussing the entries.

Traditionally Caringbah has performed exceptionally well in Spark, featuring in the top prize winners who share in $1,000 prize money. Their works now published in an anthology produced each year, with copies residing in school, local, as well as NSW and National Libraries. Now in its 4th year, the Spark Sutherland Shire Creative Writing Competition will soon reward talented students for their literary works at this year's presentation on Tuesday 10th December at the prize night at Tradies Gymea.
