‘Splendour in the Bah’

With the SRC focussing on the notion of ‘change’ in 2018, we decided that it was the perfect year to redesign, revamp and reimagine, ‘Splendour in the Bah’ - a concept for Caringbah’s annual welfare day that first debuted in 2015.

As the sun began to rise over Caringbah’s (very wet) fields on Tuesday the 3 July, the SRC was already hard at work transferring musical equipment onto the soccer field to form the centrepiece of the day – an outdoor stage to host our very own music festival. With some of Caringbah’s top musical acts such as Good Ramen of year 11 and year 12’s Tapioca Train headlining the star-studded line-up, planning and preparations that began at SRC Camp in February were finally set to come to fruition.

Commencing with a Year 12 vs. Teachers edition of Family Feud, hosted by our own Gold Logie quality host in Kal, an assembly ensured the day kicked off on a strong note. A whole school Kahoot examined the awareness of students as they were tested on questions relating to our teachers, our music program and the distance of the walk to Caringbah Station (900 metres to be exact!). However, despite the fun of the first two activities, the highlight of the morning was undoubtedly the fantastic rendition of Adele’s Someone Like You, performed by the Teachers CMP of Ms Lam, Ms Stevens and Ms De Lange.

The assembly was then followed by three hours of fun activities and competitions, including the inaugural handball and Super Smash Bros. video game competitions. Early favourites Stanley and Connor breezed through the early rounds in handball to reach the final, with the much feared and admired Stanley taking out the crown. However, his win was overshadowed by the remarkable run of Andreas from Year 7, who took out a number of Year 12’s on his way to a well-deserved 3rd place and the title of Tournament MVP. Other activities offered were Mario Kart, Table Tennis, Just Dance, Wii Sports, Soccer Challenges, Calligraphy, Art, Makeovers, Face Painting, Board Games and the fantastic Year 12 complements stand run by Georgia, Pippa, Elle and Ruby, who donated all proceeds to the World Wildlife Fund while putting a smile on the faces of students and teachers alike.

Additionally, despite the last minute withdrawal of two external vendors, students were well catered for by the donut stall, ice-cream van, year 12 bake stall, burgers and biscuit decorating, alongside Mi Goreng, pasta and bubble tea supplied by Caringbah’s own CafAbie. A last minute decision to order 50 pizzas was an overwhelming success, with over 400 slices selling out within 30 minutes!

The SRC would like to thank parents, staff, the executive and Mrs Northey for their support of the day – for without their backing the day would not have been possible. On behalf of the year 12 SRC, we hope everyone enjoyed the day and look forward to hearing about the great work of the emerging SRC members on similar events in future years!
